01 / A love letter
“The tomatoes tasted like tomatoes, which has made supermarket shopping quite upsetting. Slept brilliantly, swam daily, extended our stay. Back home, I now eat breakfast facing a wall and call it the courtyard.”

02 / A formal grumble
“Steep stairs, no lift, and a room smaller than I expected. My suitcase and I were in a long-distance relationship by the second floor. Lovely view, but you cannot put your trousers in a view. Would not book this room again.”

Fair criticism. We should make the stairs and room size clearer before booking. An old house is charming; a surprise leg day is less so.

“By day two it said ‘Please reconsider whether this email is necessary.’ By day four I was considering the same about my career. Beautiful terrace, proper coffee, lovely hosts. I have never achieved so little so thoroughly.”

“The room was clean, but early deliveries in the lane woke me up and the bed squeaked every time I turned over. I accidentally performed a small concert at 3 a.m. Breakfast was good. I would have preferred being unconscious.”

“Wonderful hosts and a lovely room. Breakfast service was a little slow one morning. The seagull service was immediate: it took my toast before I had sat down. Four stars for the hotel. Zero for that airborne middle manager.”

“We made a detailed itinerary and used it to stop a table wobbling. Walked to the water, read half a book, watched Rok argue politely with a parasol. Our biggest decision was lunch. We made it twice, to be safe.”
